It is true that pheromones were first seen on silk worms to work but the idea was already there in the odor world of scientists dealing with senses. These theories were well studied on bees and it was already known that bees communicated with their hives using chemical markers that were not understood by bees from other hives. However, the pheromones extracted from silk worms were probably the first clue towards understanding just how potent these things are when used in the right place and at the right time with the right organism.
It took time to get a significant amount of the pheromones from the body of silk worms but with a tiny concentrated amount of these chemicals, moths from far away too got attracted towards the chemicals allowing scientists to conclude that the sense of odor is the most strongest out of all senses, even in humans. However, the studies were inconclusive on whether there can be such strong pheromones for humans too.
